Growth Plates in Teenagers

📖 6 min read✅ Reviewed against BeTall's in-app growth library

Quick answer: Growth plates (areas of cartilage near the ends of long bones) are where new bone forms during childhood and adolescence. They typically close in the mid-to-late teens — generally a bit earlier for girls than boys — after which height growth stops. Only an X-ray can confirm whether yours are still open; age and puberty stage give a general estimate.

What a growth plate actually is

Growth plates, or epiphyseal plates, are soft zones of cartilage near the ends of bones like the femur, tibia, and forearm bones. New cells form here and gradually harden into bone (a process called ossification) throughout childhood and adolescence. Once a growth plate fully ossifies ("closes"), that bone can no longer lengthen — which is why final growth-plate closure marks the end of height growth.

Roughly when growth plates close

There's real individual variation, but general patterns are: girls often see growth plates close around ages 14-16, following the earlier onset of puberty; boys typically a bit later, often around 16-18. Growth continues at a slowing rate through puberty until this closure, rather than stopping abruptly.

How to get a realistic read on your own timeline

  • Puberty stage is a better clue than age alone — someone further along in puberty has less remaining growth window than someone the same age earlier in puberty.
  • Growth rate is informative — if your height hasn't changed in 6-12 months despite consistent measurement, your plates may be close to closing.
  • A bone-age X-ray is the only definitive answer — useful if there's a genuine medical question, not something needed for general curiosity.

If you're near the end of your growth window

Sleep, nutrition, and posture habits are still worth maintaining for overall health, bone density, and how tall you actually stand — even after growth plates close, posture-related height (a few centimeters for many people) is still very much in play.

How BeTall helps with this

BeTall's learn library breaks down growth-plate timing by age and puberty stage in plain language, and the AI coach can answer specific follow-up questions like 'is it too late for me to grow?' based on what you enter about your own stage.
